church
A church is a building where Christians gather to worship, pray, and form community. People also use the word for the congregation itself, or for a whole religious denomination. The word carries weight: history, ritual, belonging, sometimes hurt or exclusion.
What a model may hear
- Church numerals lambda calculus and functional programming
- treats 'church' as encoding numbers as higher-order functions, and may rewrite arithmetic into lambda abstractions
- Church-Turing thesis computability theory
- connects the term to formal limits on computation, possibly inserting theoretical asides
- Alonzo Church logic and computer science history
- may attribute quotes, prioritize biographical facts, or assume the user studies formal logic
- Church encoding programming language theory
- expects the user wants to encode data types without built-in numbers or booleans
Where people and models part ways
“Help me find a church near me”
Meant: wants a local Christian congregation to visit
May be taken as: explains how to compute church numerals in Python or lists lambda calculus tutorials
Say instead: “Find Christian churches near my location with Sunday services”
“What is the true church?”
Meant: seeks theological or historical guidance on authentic faith
May be taken as: delivers a lecture on Alonzo Church's contributions to logic versus Alan Turing's
Say instead: “Explain different Christian views on which denomination represents the true church”
“Church and state”
Meant: the political principle of separating religious and government power
May be taken as: discusses the Church-Turing thesis and its implications for physical computation
Say instead: “Explain the separation of church and state in United States constitutional law”
“I was hurt by the church”
Meant: shares emotional or spiritual pain from a religious community
May be taken as: interprets as a bug report about Church encoding in a functional programming library
Say instead: “I experienced harm in a religious community and need emotional support”
Tips
- Lead with context: say 'Christian church,' 'Catholic church,' or 'local congregation' to block technical senses
- When you mean the mathematician, say 'Alonzo Church' or 'Church the logician'
- For lambda calculus topics, use 'Church numerals' or 'Church encoding' explicitly
- If discussing religion and computation together, separate them into distinct sentences
- When emotional or pastoral needs are present, state that directly so the model responds with care
